Model United Nations, or Model UN or MUN, is a 7th period class offered at Palos Verdes High to those interested in world
politics and the United Nations. Students serve as a delegate for a certain country, for which they must research its history
and views on the topic their committee pertains to. Conferences are then held at multiple schools during the year where they
give speeches, debate, and write resolutions to world problems with delegates from other schools.
Meetings are held every Wendesday during lunch in room 411, Mr. Stoddart's room and each student is required to complete 20
hours of MUN related activity time each month. Students can enroll into the class after trying out in an audition which is
held in the very beginning of each school year. Both new and returning members must try out at an audition for the start of
each school year.

Requirements and Grading
Because MUN is a class this year, you will be receiving a grade. Your grade will be based on meeting the following requirments:
- 70% of grade - meeting monthly hour requirements
- 30% of grade - participation in meetings/ conferences/ events
Meeting Monthly Hour Requirements:
The district requires u s to meet and hold activites that will add up to 20 hours for each month. Keep an accurate, honest,
and neat log sheet for each month, with all of the necessary signatures. Do not lose it, and make sure to turn it in ON TIME.
Remember that we will check all log sheets with our records at the end of each month.
Attending Weekly Lunch Meetings:
You must attend every Wenesday lunch meeting. You must stay for the whole meeting, and get an approval signature at the end
(you cannot show up for the last five minutes and expect to be marked present). If you cannot make it to a meeting, your
absence needs to be excused. The same attendance policies of excused and unexcused absences apply to MUN meetings. You must
present a note to Sanaz Ziad, who is in charge of attendance, in order to have your absence excused. (Do not call the school
attendance office).
Attending Conferences:
You are required to attend at least 2 conferences per semester. Also, during the actual conference, board memebers will constantly
be visiting your committees to make sure you are in committee and are on task. Also, elements such as you adhering to the
dress code will be noted.
Delegates are required to wear proper delegate dress. This includes a Western-style dress attire in which boys wear dress
shirts and shoes, suits, and ties and ladies wear dress shirts, skirts and shoes, suits, and blouses/cardigans. Short, overly
baggy, revealing, and gang-like clothing is not accepted as it may distract from the conference agenda. Delegates found infringing
these rules may be removed from the conference.
Grade: Active Participation, proper dress, quality of research, punctuality, turning in all checks and paperwork on time.
Turning in all dues on time:
You must turn in all of your conference fees on time to Deborah Kim, the treasurer. Make all checks (except the transportation
charge) out to PVHS MUN.
Turning in all assignments on time:
Almost every conference requires a Position Paper or a Resolution. You must write whichever one is asked of you, and turn
it in on the due date set forth by the board. Remember, you are being graded so do your best on these.
Also, be prepared to complete any other assignment given to you, such as writing a position paper in addition to a resolution.
By completing these assignments, you will add hours to your log sheet (a maximum of 5 hours, based on your quality and content
of work)
- If you do not meet these requirements, you may be dropped from the class.
- You will be graded on a point scale for all of these requirements. In general, if you do the assignments and meet the requirements,
you will receive all of the points, and vise versa. Grades will be updated on Edline every 5 weeks.
- You will be recognized if you win an award at a conference.
Cheating
As in any other class, cheating is a serious offense. Cheating is NOT permitted in any conference. Forms of cheating include
pre-written working papers/resolutions and plagiarism. Any copied versions of other works and ideas (without proper citation
and credits) into delegates’ speeches, comments, working papers/resolutions, etc. are NOT allowed nor tolerated. Re-wording
original works is still plagiarism of concept. Offenders will be immediately dismissed from the conference with notice to
their advisors.
